‘A discussion on death and saying goodbye’

The idea behind ‘A discussion on death and saying goodbye’ – really a sort of essay – arose in relation to the tenth Concerto in Memoriam in Westerveld Cemetery & Crematorium’s memorial park at which Irene van Lippe-Biesterfeld spoke.

Many bereaved feel the need after a funeral to ponder in all peace and quiet what they have been through and to contemplate how to say goodbye to the deceased’s remains. This led to the idea to publish a book about this difficult but precious subject that ‘the Facultatieve’ could make available to families who arrange ceremonies in its crematoria and cemeteries.

"When I was asked to write a book about this subject, I realised that this was not going to be an easy task," said Irene van Lippe-Biesterfeld, "but it is an important and also precious subject which everyone has to go through. Everyone deals with death and final farewells in his or her own way. And that also applies to the mourning process. The result is an essay that I dearly hope will provide some folk with comfort or inspiration."
